Schools back in session

Oconee Superintendent of Education Dr. Mike Lucas, Seneca Mayor Dan Alexander, and Congressman Jeff Duncan are among those expressing sadness and condolences over the tragedy in Connecticut. Lucas said principals, counselors, and teachers will support and comfort Oconee students, especially the younger ones, who return to classes this morning, after a weekend of learning and talking about what happened at the Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. A message from Lucas to parents, along with a link to a resource, has been placed on the Oconee School District website. In that message, Lucas says, “Our primary goal as a school system is to provide a nurturing and safe environment in which children may learn and grow. Our desire is to have a secure workplace in which school staff members can perform their professional responsibilities. I assure you that we will continue to work to provide such environments in the schools of Oconee County, and we’ll partner with law enforcement to enhance our safety and security procedures based on this latest incident.”
