Schools choose honchos from within

Oconee school trustees have signed a deal officially naming Dr. Michael Thorsland as county superintendent of education. They gave their unanimous support to a motion following an executive session last night to award Thorsland a three-year contract at a salary of $135 thousand annually—along with some other benefits such as an annuity and the use of a district car. Thorsland has been serving as the interim superintendent, following the retirement last month of Dr. Michael Lucas. Thorsland reacted by saying, “I’m very excited and just honored that they are giving me this opportunity.” Board Chairman Andy Inabinet also announced that the trustees have decided to select from within the district Thorsland’s replacement as assistant superintendent for operations. That duty will go to Steve Hanvey, who is in his first year as assistant superintendent for instruction.
