Scope of hazing case widened today

Authorities say the scope of an incident of suspected hazing involving Walhalla soccer players has widened in nature. Dr. Michael Thorsland, county superintendent, said new information has been provided Walhalla High Principal Steve Garrett as to what allegedly took place the night of March 16 as the Razorback boys’ soccer team returned by bus from a game at Pickens. And Police Chief Ronald Wilbanks said this afternoon he was on his way to meet with Sheriff Mike Crenshaw to discuss whether Crenshaw’s office should join the investigation. Thorsland said Saturday that five Walhalla players had been suspended, but he said new information received today may increase the numbers of those allegedly involved. As to what the alleged hazing amounted to, Thorsland is referring those questions to law enforcement. Wilbanks says there was “some wrestling” allegedly involved and some “inappropriate touching.” Though depleted in number, the Razorbacks are continuing their season’s schedule with a game tonight against Wren.
