Search crews locate kayaker’s body

July 2, 2013

After 13 days, search crews have again located the body of Thomas Hill in the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River. Rainfall, however, has caused river flows to rise above safe levels. They hope to start this morning to recover the Tampa, Florida man’s body and return it to his family. “We have located Mr. Hill’s body deep in the Sockem-Dog Rapid,” said Incident Commander Marty Dixon. Yesterday nine members of Georgia Search and Rescue Task Force 7, from Atlanta Fire-Rescue, assisted personnel from Oconee and Rabun counties and used sonar equipment to locate Hill with a high degree of confidence. Hill was spotted once before during the search, but river currents moved the body.
