Seneca Leaders address “Destination Oconee”

Seneca City Leaders are focusing on future marketing plans for the County of Oconee, in which Seneca will have a key role. The marketing plan, “Destination Oconee” is a plan prepared by the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor based on a month long study.  During Tuesday’s Seneca City Council meeting, Phil Shirley, director of the Oconee County Parks, Recreation & Tourism, recommended integrating the county’s cultural, historical, and natural resources into the development of the country economy. Shirley said around 450,000 people visited the county last year, bringing $56 million into the local economy. According to state resources, Oconee County saw an increase of 20 percent in tourism dollars between 2006 to 2012. Mayor Dan Alexander indicated that the City Council would take the plan into consideration and incorporate the recommendations for the city in at least one work session.
