Seneca observes Black History Month

Seneca observes Black History Month with a free luncheon today for which all available seating at the Gignilliat Community Center has been taken.  The keynoter will be a former Senecan who graduated from Blue Ridge, the city’s former all-black high school, and went onto to distinguish himself in a landmark-setting career in the legal field.  The Hon. Jasper Cureton, a 1956 Blue Ridge High graduate, served as an Associate Judge on the South Carolina Court of Appeals, having been elected the first African-American appellate judge in the state since re-construction.  A biographical sketch of Cureton indicates a long history of caring for those who are less than fortunate.  At one time, Cureton worked as a social investigator for the New York City Department of Welfare.
