Separation of church and state complaint

Seneca resident Kevin Larkin says the principle of separation of church and state is being violated by Seneca High School allowing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to sponsor a basketball tournament at the school. Larkin took his complaint last night to the Oconee County School Board. He complained that by allowing the FCA a portion of the paid admittance fees, it equates to a coach directing players to raise funds for the organization. The trustees heard Larkin’s presentation and made no comment. But, in comments after last night’s meeting, County Superintendent of Education Dr. Michael Thorlsland said there are other instances of the school district raising money for non-profit organizations—an example of which is the American Heart Association. Thorsland said it’s his understanding of the law that the district must treat all non-profits alike.
