Sheriff pursues idea of armed school personnel

The Oconee County sheriff is pursuing the idea of armed school personnel and trained to protect the lives of students and others in the event of a dangerous school situation.  Sheriff Mike Crenshaw broached the idea last night to members of the county council and plans to report back once he ascertains the legality of arming school personnel.  Crenshaw told 101.7/WGOG NEWS, “I think everyone is calling for safer schools and how do we get there.”  Council Chairman Paul Cain said he’s anxious to hear back from Crenshaw, but, “We can’t necessarily militarize every public building in this county, but we do need to make our schools as safe as we reasonably can and we will do that as quickly as possible.”  During the council comment session, Jean Jennings called for armed school personnel and said they should be able to press one button to reach 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
