Spearman the last elected superintendent?

Come January, Molly Spearman begins a four-year term as South Carolina Superintendent of Education. But will she be the last state superintendent elected by a popular vote of the citizenry? The question was raised this morning at Seneca where the city’s state lawmaker, Representative Bill Sandifer, addressed a policy committee of the Oconee Chamber of Commerce. Championed by Governor Nikki Haley, South Carolina is becoming a state in which cabinet and department heads are picked by the governor. And Sandifer predicts a bill to convert the office of state superintendent from elective to appointive will be introduced in the new legislative year. Superintendent-elect Spearman visited Seneca High School yesterday in a different capacity to announce Seneca Principal Cliff Roberts the 2015 South Carolina High School Principal of the Year.
