Spending the night in DC!

At least some Duke Energy representatives who’ve gone to the nation’s capital for government meetings are likely to spend the night in the area. There was one meeting scheduled today, followed by another tomorrow. Duke officials are meeting with Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff about two subjects—the potential for flooding at the Oconee Nuclear Station and a failure to make fire protection upgrades by an appointed date. The flooding meeting, according to the NRC’s Roger Hannah, took place this morning at the government watchdog’s offices in nearby Rockville, Maryland. At tomorrow’s meeting, they’ll hold another get together regarding the “apparent violation” which NRC claims Duke committed by missing a deadline to upgrade Oconee Nuclear’s safeguards against fire. The potential for a stiff fine looms, but not tomorrow, according to Hannah.
