Spike detected in Probate Judge’s marriage ceremonies

At least two factors appear to be contributing to an increase in marriage ceremonies at the Oconee County Probate Judge’s Office in Walhalla. The office has always been a place where you not only apply to get hitched, but offers ceremonies for those willing to pay a fee to say the matrimonial vows. Judge Kenny Johns, sometimes called the marrying judge, said all of a sudden, in the aftermath of the legalization of same-sex marriage in South Carolina, fewer and fewer of his counterparts across the Upstate are conducting “courthouse-type marriages.” So, that has led betrothed couples to John’s office. Johns says since the same-sex ruling, he has performed 17 same-sex ceremonies—with most of the couples coming from Georgia, where same-sex marriage remains illegal. After being sworn in yesterday for the start of his second term in office, Johns told 96.3/WGOG NEWS he doesn’t mind performing marriage ceremonies—whether they are for heterosexual or homosexual couples. But he does believe it’s time to raise the rates. County Administrator Scott Moulder confirmed Johns’ seeks a rate increase, and it will be considered by him as he prepares the county’s general budget request for the year that will begin July 1.
