Student charged with assaulting officer

March 4, 2014

A Clemson student has been arrested on the charge that he assaulted a police officer while resisting arrest. William Van Tuyl Hobbie IV, 19 years old from Montclair, New Jersey, was arrested in a room in Johnstone Hall Friday night while the police and fire fighters were searching to be sure everyone had evacuated the building after a fire alarm was triggered when someone set off an extinguisher. The university quotes an incident report as saying when they tried to enter the room, the occupant slammed the door against the police officer, then grabbed his uniform and shoved him. Hobbie was charged with assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest. He was also charged with interfering with an officer, possession of liquor by person under 21 years old and possession of beer by person under 21.
