Suspected fire forces train to stop

October 11, 2013

Smoke and apparently fire could be seen from a freight train passing through Oconee County this morning on its way to Georgia. Tracking the train from Seneca to Westminster and beyond, emergency personnel in the county were able to reach Norfolk Southern personnel, and the train was stopped for a brief time while train crews attended to what was wrong. According to Charlie King, Oconee County Fire Chief, it was never necessary for the county’s fire fighters, trucks, and equipment to help. But they were deployed, just in case. “Not for sure it was a fire, but there was a mechanical problem that they (the railroad) were able to rectify and move on,” King said.
