Tamassee woman arrested in Salem fraud case

The Salem police have confirmed the arrest this week of a 27-year old woman charged with obtaining money by false pretense. Chief Dave Poulson said the woman arrested on Tuesday, Cassie Marie Owens of Tamassee, has been released from jail and ordered to appear in Municipal Court April 15. Owens’ arrest came after more than one month investigation of an incident at a Salem beauty parlor in which a woman approached people and began to try to sell tickets for what she said was a fundraiser involving the elementary school. The police were told that for each ticket sold, St. Jude’s cancer research would benefit, and the ticket buyer would be entered for a car giveaway at WGOG. But the police determined that Tamassee-Salem Elementary was not conducting any door-to-door fundraisers, nor was WGOG raffling a car.
