Tax district to be rescinded

Oconee County officials have agreed to rescind a special tax district that was formedto raise money to upgrade a sub-standard road inside a subdivision near Seneca. The county and the homeowners in Stone Pond subdivision off highway 59 had pursued a special tax district. According to County Council Chairman Joel Thrift, tax bills of Stone Pond homeowners would be increased to pay for the county’s work on a road left in sub-standard condition by the subdivision developer. But Thrift, speaking as the chairman of the road and transportation committee, said there has been a 27% changeover in Stone Pond homeowners and opposition has mounted to paying the additional tax. So, according to Thrift, the special tax district venture there is dead.
