The Botanical Garden weathers the storm

A flood two years ago wreaked havoc on the South Carolina Botanical Garden at Clemson.  But that venue escaped last weekend’s historic storm—relatively unscathed.  On July 11, 2013, in just a few hours, more than 11 inches of rain fell.  Sixty-four million gallons of water rose out of the Duck Pond and blasted thru the Natural Heritage Garden Trail.  But lessons learned and actions taken afterward paid off this year.  Last Thursday-Sunday more than nine inches fell.  Except for a few downed trees, some cracked asphalt roads and minor damage to a couple of new exhibits, the garden avoided catastrophe.  “We learned from what happened in 2013 and applied what we learned – and it worked,” Botanical Garden director Patrick McMillan said.
