The mayor will invite discussion

After two Westminster council members took opposite positions, Mayor Rick McCormick said he will devote part of next month’s meeting to whether his city is too aggressive in enforcing sign rules. A Bible class sign judged in violation of the city’s rules led to a debate last night between council members Yousef Mefleh and Bill Brockington that ended without resolution. Mefleh complained that the city’s attitude about signs is further proof that city government drives people away from Westminster. But Mayor Pro-tem Brockington reminded Mefleh that a strong sentiment to clean up the city was expressed during a recent public workshop. And Brockington said portable signs are a culprit. He said they are illegal in Westminster. Mefleh, a restaurateur, countered, “What’s wrong with a sign that advertises a $2.99 breakfast?”
