Treasurer and OSD at loggerheads

Oconee Treasurer Greg Nowell takes the position he’s just looking out for taxpayers’ money, but Dr. Michael Thorsland, the county’s acting superintendent for education questions whether Nowell exceeded the authority of his office. Treasurer Nowell says he’s OK with allowing the state’s legal department to decide. Nowell says he will draft a letter, as early as today, to ask the South Carolina Attorney’s General Office whether he acted properly in placing monies collected from fees and penalties into the general county budget instead of setting aside parts of those funds for the public schools.
