Trustees chairman raises hopes for an ordinance

The ink has dried on an assistant attorney’s general opinion covering the disposition of taxes and fees accrued from Oconee County delinquent collections. But the chairman of the school board is hopeful for an eventual settlement in favor of the public schools. Andy Inabinet indicated yesterday all it would take would be an Oconee County ordinance directing the county treasurer to resume sharing a portion of the delinquent collections with the district. “We hope they would consider that,” Inabinet said. And he indicated there already have been informal talks with council members. The opinion from Assistant Attorney General Anita Smith was seen as a validation to Treasurer Greg Nowell’s argument that it was proper for him to deposit the delinquent taxes and late fees into the county’s general treasury—denying the district monies it had been receiving for years.
