TUESDAY SPORTS: DB’s commit to Clemson; Braves crush Mets; Carlson promoted

*Clemson nabbed a pair of football commitments in attendance at Saturday night’s 38-35 win over Georgia. Pledging to play football for the Tigers were defensive back Jefferie Gibson of Hope Milles, North Carolina and defensive back Van Smith of Charlotte.

*In the majors on Monday, Freddie Freeman homered, doubled and tied a career high with five RBIs, powering the Atlanta Braves past the New York Mets 13-5. That series continues Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Turner Field.

*Furman’s Ben Carlson, a 2013 Major League Baseball Draft selection of the Los Angeles Angels, has been promoted to Orem of the Pioneer League. Carlson, a right-handed pitcher and 40th round pick, earned the promotion following strong work with the Angels’ Arizona League (AZL) affiliate, where he posted a 4-0 record and 1.73 earned run average with a league best 10 saves.

*Seventh-seeded Roger Federer was eliminated in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Monday night, falling 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4 to 19th-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain. This marks the first time in a decade that the once-dominant Federer didn’t make the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows, and it comes after he lost in the semifinals at the Australian Open in January, the quarterfinals at the French Open in June, and the second round of Wimbledon later that same month.

*Sixty-four-year-old American endurance swimmer Diana Nyad on Monday became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. It took some 53 hours for Nyad to make the journey after starting from Havana on Saturday, stopping only occasionally for nourishment, but never leaving the water.

*Two days after releasing Tim Tebow when NFL teams cut their rosters to 53 players, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on Monday wouldn’t rule out a possible return of the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. Tebow went 11 for 30 for 145 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three exhibition games with the Patriots.
