TUESDAY SPORTS: Season ends for Atlanta; MLB postseason; ACC honors for Boyd

*Atlanta_BravesThe Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 4-3 Monday in L.A. to win their best-of-five National League Division Series 3 games to 1. The big hit came from the Dodgers’ Juan Uribe, who knocked a go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning. L.A. advances to the National League Championship Series, where they’ll play the winner of the St. Louis-Pittsburgh series.

*The St. Louis Cardinals one-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, getting a 2-1 victory in Pittsburgh to even up their NLDS at 2-2. Cardinals starter Michael Wacha took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning and then gave up the Pirates’ only hit of the game, a solo home run to Pedro Alvarez. Game 5 will be played Wednesday in St. Louis to determine who’ll advance to face the L.A. Dodgers in the NLCS.

*The Tampa Bay Rays staved off being swept in their American League Division Series by winning Monday’s  game at home against the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on a walkoff solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning by Jose Lobaton. Boston’s lead is now 2 games to 1, with the teams to play Game 4 Tuesday in Florida.

*The Oakland A’s defeated the Tigers 6-3 in Detroit Monday to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five AL Division Series. Game 4 will be played Tuesday in Motown.

*In high school volleyball on Monday, Wren defeated Seneca 3-2.

*Quarterbacks Tajh Boyd of Clemson and Jameis Winston of Florida State head up the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Player of the Week honorees for Week 6 after leading their teams to conference victories with eye-opening performances on Saturday. Boyd was named the ACC Offensive Back of the Week after throwing for a school-record 455 yards and five touchdowns in the third-ranked Tigers’ 49-14 ACC road win at Syracuse. Boyd was one of three Clemson players honored, as senior guard Kalon Davis picked up ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week accolades, and junior end Vic Beasley was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week

*Clemson’s ACC showdown with Florida State next week will kick off at 8:00 at Death Valley. The game will be televised nationally by ABC. There have also been rumblings that ESPN’s popular College Football GameDay show could return for the matchup.

*The South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers will kick off at noon ET on Saturday, October 19, the SEC announced Monday. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. The No. 14/12 Gamecocks are off to a 4-1 start this season, including a 2-1 mark in the SEC. They will travel to Fayetteville this weekend for a matchup with the Arkansas Razorbacks (3-3, 0-2 SEC). Tennessee (3-3, 0-2 SEC) is idle this week.

*Furman quarterback Duncan Fletcher has been named Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance against Elon on Saturday, the league announced Monday. Fletcher, a true freshman making his first collegiate start, completed 25-of-38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown.

*The latest SportsNetwork FCS top 25 features two teams from the Palmetto State. Coastal Carolina was off last week but moved up one spot to 8th. They are 5-0 and will play host to Gardner-Webb Saturday. Wofford blew out Presbyterian Saturday and the Terriers are ranked 12th this week, up five spaces from their previous spot.

*The New York Jets edged the Atlanta Falcons 30-28 in Monday Night Football at the Georgia Dome, getting the victory on Nick Folk’s 43-yard field goal on the final play after the Falcons had gone ahead 28-27 on a touchdown with 1:54 remaining. Jets quarterback Geno Smith went 16 of 20 for 199 yards with three touchdowns, and Falcons QB Matt Ryan was 36 of 45 passes for 319 yards with two TDs.
