TUESDAY SPORTS: Watkins, Beasley make ACC first team; Quarles honored; Furman tickets available for Fargo

Clemson juniors Sammy Watkins and Vic Beasley were named first-team All-ACC by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association on Monday. It is the second first-team selection for Watkins and the first selection for Beasley, who is in his first year as a starting defensive end. Overall, 12 Clemson players were named to various All-ACC teams. Quarterback Tajh Boyd was named second-team All-ACC along with offensive tackle Brandon Thomas and cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

South Carolina junior defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles has been recognized for his outstanding play in the Gamecocks’ 31-17 win over Clemson on Saturday night. Quarles, a 6-4, 298-pounder from Hodges, was named the SEC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week by the SEC office and the National Defensive Player of the Week by Athlon Sports.

Tickets for Furman’s FCS second round playoff matchup at top-ranked North Dakota State this Saturday are now on sale at the Furman University Athletic Ticket Office in Timmons Arena. The Seattle Seahawks rolled over the New Orleans Saints 34-7 in Monday Night Football, becoming the first team to clinch a spot in the NFC playoffs. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson went 22 of 30 for 310 yards with three touchdown passes, while Saints QB Drew Brees was 23 of 38 for 147 yards with one touchdown.

In high school basketball Monday, Greer’s boys team defeated Seneca 77-57. The teams meet up again on Friday, this time at Seneca. Greer’s girls were also victorious, with a 56-46 win over the Lady Bobcats. In JV play, Seneca’s boys got past the Yellow Jackets 55-23, while Greer’s girls took a 42-19 win.

In the NBA Monday, Tim Duncan made a jumper with .4 seconds left to lift the San Antonio Spurs to a 102-100 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

The Clemson men’s basketball team is in action Monday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. The 6-1 Tigers will tip off at 7:00 PM against South Carolina State.
