Vandals’ act at Tillman Hall

Vandals left their mark during the night at the Clemson landmark Tillman Hall.  The vandalism was reported to the police at 7:30 this morning.  Police say messages “Rename Tillman Hall” “Stop Honoring Tillman” were spray-painted on the building near the entrance.  The vandals’ act comes at a time when some people are calling for the university to rename the building because Benjamin Tillman, an early supporter of Clemson’s founding, was regarded as a segregationist. Cathy Sams, chief spokeswoman for the university, said, “We hope that this incident doesn’t take away from the positive work that is being done to better document and tell the full history of Clemson University.”  Facilities workers are evaluating the best way to clean the old brick without damaging it.  Anyone with information pertaining to the incident should contact the campus police at 864/656-2222.
