Videos shown of robbery and pool vandalism

The Walhalla police are drawing attention to video surveillance in the hope that it will lead someone to come forward with information that can help solve two crimes that have rocked the County Seat. They were reported three days apart. Chief Ronald Wilbanks this morning narrated a video recording which showed in progress the February 9 robbery of the Corner Store on Main Street. A man, believed to be African-American whose face was hidden by a mask, is shown robbing the store clerk late night at what police say amounted to around $500 dollars. The robber seemed to act calm and cool, suggesting to one reporter who watched the video that this robbery was not his first. Wilbanks then turned his attention to the discovery February 12 of the destruction by vandals of the men’s bathroom at municipal swimming pool. The police have yet to determine the instruments used to inflict what’s estimated to be $7,500 dollars damage. The chief says he’s not sure if the vandal or vandals used a sledgehammer. Considering the effort it took to rehabilitate the pool, city councilman Danny Woodward said what happened at the pool between January 2 and February 12 demonstrates the need for enhanced security—especially with the back fence that the intruders cut to make their entry.
