I-85 corridor forecast as “Ground Zero” for winterv event

The state Department of Transportation considers the I-85 corridor, which passes thru Oconee, as “Ground Zero” for the winter weather event.  DOT quotes a forecast as saying rain will move over the state late this afternoon and change overnight to a mix of rain and sleet.  Counties from Anderson east to Marlboro could see winter mix.  Tomorrow morning’s rain and sleet are to transition to a mix including freezing rain.  Ice accumulation in the range of a quarter of one percent.  The forecast still questionable for the track of the storm and how fast the low will move over the state and deepen offshore.  Best guess is for clearing late on Saturday afternoon.  DOT crews in the Upstate continue to pre-treat roads. They are focusing on the area of I-85 to the northern parts of the counties—especially on the mountain roads.   Crews today switch to 12 hour shifts.
