Walhalla announces softball tourney

Dixie Youth teams from four counties are coming to Walhalla next month for a week-long softball tournament that city leaders hope will help showcase what the city can offer visitors. During a City Hall meeting last night, city council members commended John Galbreath, recreation director, for organizing the tournament. Teams entered are coming from Oconee, Anderson, Pickens and Abbeville counties. The games will be played June 22-28 with competition in various age groups. City Councilman Deek Biemann says he’d like to see a simultaneous chamber of commerce event to recognize the visitors and the financial impact they’ll create for Walhalla. Biemann is thinking in terms of booking a band for an event along the lines of Seneca’s popular Jazz on the Alley. As Mayor Pro-tem T-J Bagwell put it: “These people will need to eat.”
