Walhalla family credited with 100 years’ weather watching

Without the Brandts of Walhalla, the National Weather Service likely would have been unable to record South Carolina weather for the last 100 years.  NOAA has confirmed that no other family in its history of “weather watching” had served in the capacity of volunteer weather reporting.  And the South Carolina Senate has taken notice.  Thomas Alexander, Oconee-Pickens Republican, has offered a resolution to recognize and congratulate the Brandt family.  The family’s records date back to April 16, 1916 when H-W Brandt began to report the rainfall and temperature readings from his farm in Walhalla.  Mr. Brandt continued his reports until his death in 1950.  His daughter, Henrietta Brandt, took over and she served for many years.  Miss Brandt, a school choral teacher, became a daily personality with her weather reports that aired on radio stations WGOG and WSNW.  In 2000, Barbara Dilworth Wilson took over, and she continues to report the weather.
