Walhalla students get involved in their community

Students at Walhalla Elementary School are using their city’s project to re-make a four-block section of the downtown as a way to get involved in the community and learn thru service. The Student Council is leading an effort at the school to raise money toward the purchase of one of the trees to be planted in place of the Bradford Pear trees. Grant money is paying for the street work, but trees are not included. The Student Council is sponsoring a hat day, a pajama day, and a “Donate Your Leftover Change” effort. School officials say no one is being forced to contribute. Yet the project is not going over well with everybody. One parent told 96.3/WGOG NEWS he objected to the cutting down of the Bradford trees and doesn’t want his child contributing his change.
