WEDNESDAY SPORTS: Davis will not start against CCU; Clemson set for Military Appreciation Day; Croone earns POTW

South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier announced on Tuesday that sophomore running back Mike Davis, who leads the SEC in rushing, will not start this Saturday afternoon when the Gamecocks host Coastal Carolina. Sophomore Shon Carson will get the start. Davis is dealing with a bruised shoulder and ribs. Spurrier added that backup quarterback Dylan Thompson will get playing time against Coastal as well. It’s the first ever meeting between the Gamecocks and Chanticleers.

Clemson University celebrates Military Appreciation Day on Saturday as the Clemson football team plays host to The Citadel at noon, and the university has a full slate of activities planned throughout the day in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the event. The game features the school’s first ever Purple Out as fans are encouraged to wear purple in support of the military. Bowman Field will open officially at 8 a.m., and will have the largest display of military vehicles in the 20-year history of Military Appreciation Day. Furman sophomore Stephen Croone has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.. A native of Covington, Ga., Croone averaged 27.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists last week as the Paladins went 1-1. Furman topped Gardner-Webb, 75-64, last Tuesday before falling to Florida Gulf Coast, 70-69, on Friday night.

In the NBA Tuesday, Chris Bosh scored 19 points, Mario Chalmers went on a person 9-0 run in a 39-second spurt of the pivotal third quarter, and the Miami Heat topped the Atlanta Hawks 104-88 for their fourth straight win.

The Anderson University men and women host a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Brevard Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center. The women tip off at 6:00 PM with the men to follow.

Kobe Bryant practiced with the L.A. Lakers at full speed in five-on-five drills for the first time Tuesday, according to ESPN, which reported that he said he might be able to return to the team by the end of the month. Bryant has been out since rupturing his Achilles tendon in a game on April 12th last season, and was just cleared to resume all basketball activities this past weekend.
