WEDNESDAY SPORTS: Hokies beat Furman; Magic down Hawks; Fowler named Coach of the Year

Virginia Tech drained 12 three-pointers and placed five players in double figures to claim a 75-54 victory over Furman in men’s basketball action on Tuesday evening at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. Leading 51-42 with under eight minutes remaining, Will Johnston, Jerell Eddie and Marshall Wood each buried a three-pointer as part of a 15-2 Virginia Tech run to help the Hokies answer a late Furman rally and put the game out of reach.

In the NBA Tuesday, the Orlando Magic snapped a 17-game road losing streak with a 109-92 win over the Atlanta Hawks. For the Hawks, Al Horford and Jeff Teague each finished with 15 points as Atlanta lost consecutive games for the first time this season.

Furman senior All-American offensive tackle Dakota Dozier has captured the Southern Conference Jacobs Blocking Award and Paladin coach Bruce Fowler has been named SoCon Coach of the Year. Eleven Paladins were accorded All-SoCon honors representing 17 total selections.

Entrants will be announced on January 8.
