WEDNESDAY SPORTS: Police say Miles not victim of robbery; Local players make HS all-star list; Furman baseball schedule released

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says it appears earlier information they received about the shooting of former Gamecock running back Kenny Miles turned out to be false. The sheriff also said investigators no longer believe Miles was the victim of a robbery attempt, as they originally said on Monday. Miles was wounded in a shooting near an Irmo business park around 1 p.m. Monday.Lott says his department has no further information about why Miles was shot, only that robbery was not the motive.

The South Carolina Football Coaches Association (SCFCA) have announced the members of the 2013 Palmetto Champions All-Star Football Tea. Among the all-stars on the list are two area athletes: Lineman Chris Mackey of Belton Honea Path High School, and kicker Alex Haynes of Pendleton.

Six games at Fluor Field, including clashes against both South Carolina and Clemson, and 34 contests within the Palmetto state highlight Furman’s 2014 baseball schedule, released Tuesday by Paladin head coach Ron Smith. Furman will play South Carolina on Apr. 8 and Clemson on May 13 at Fluor Field, part of a 28-game home schedule that also features three contests in the First Pitch Invitational versus Norfolk State (Feb. 14), Xavier (Feb. 15), and Toledo (Feb. 16) at the beautiful downtown facility, which serves as the home of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox Single A South Atlantic League affiliate Greenville Drive. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday that he has a fractured left collarbone and doesn’t know yet how long he’ll be out. The 2011 NFL MVP was injured on Monday night when he was sacked during the Packers’ first series by the Chicago Bears’ Shea McClellin. The injury, which Rodgers called “significant,” is to his left, non-throwing shoulder. Seneca Wallace will fill in until Rodgers’ return.

The Houston Texans said Tuesday that coach Gary Kubiak suffered a mini-stroke when he collapsed during halftime of the Texans’ loss Sunday to the Indianapolis Colts. Kubiak was released from the hospital Tuesday, but there’s no word on when the 52-year-old will resume coaching. Kubiak said in a statement that doctors told him he will make a full recovery. A mini-stroke, medically called a transient ischemic attack, takes place when blood flow to the brain is briefly interrupted, usually by a blood clot or narrowed blood vessels.

In the NBA Tuesday, Kemba Walker scored 25 points, Gerald Henderson added 18 and the Charlotte Bobcats held off a late run by New York to beat the Knicks 102-97.

A 23-year-old professional player from Michigan won the World Series of Poker Tuesday night  at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, taking the title and its $8.4 million prize. Ryan Riess became the champion after dispatching his final opponent in the no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament, Jay Farber, a Las Vegas club promoter.
