WEDNESDAY SPORTS: Seneca’s Green headed to Berea; Brown set to leave Texas; HS hoops

Seneca Bobcat head football coach Wayne Green resigned on Tuesday. According to a press release issued Tuesday, Green has resigned his duties effective immediately. In four seasons at Seneca, Green led the Bobcats to the Class AAA playoffs each season, compiling a 27-19 record. A press conference was held at Berea High School in Greenville County Wednesday morning to name Green the new head coach there. Green was previously at Berea from 1986-1999 and is the school’s all-time wins leader. Meanwhile, Seneca High School has already begun the process of identifying potential candidates to be the next Head Football Coach. There is no definitive time table on when a new coach will be named.

Another coach is stepping down. Despite reports to the contrary, sources are telling Fox Sports Wednesday that Texas Head Coach Mack Brown will step by week’s end. Nick Saban is rumored to be talking to Longhorn officials. He’s had a new contract on his desk from Alabama since Tuesday, but has yet to sign it.

In high school basketball Tuesday, Walhalla’s boys cruised past Liberty, 97-54. Will Robert was the leading scorer with 32 points for the 4-0 Razorbacks. The Walhalla girls were winners as well, defeating the Lady Red Devils 34-14 behind 11 points from Breanna Richardson.

Highlands, NC defeated the boys from Tamassee-Salem 61-38. Liberty will visit the Eagles on Thursday.

Three South Carolina Gamecocks were named to the 2013 Coaches All-SEC football team released on Tuesday afternoon. Junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and junior defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles earned first-team accolades with sophomore tailback Mike Davis earning second-team honors.

Guard Devonte Williams led five Lions in double figures with 20 points and added 10 assists to propel NCAA Division II Mars Hill to a 97-93 upset victory over Furman in non-conference men’s basketball action Tuesday evening on YP Court at Timmons Arena. The loss snapped Furman’s 36-game winning streak against non-NCAA Division I foes and marked its first setback against a non-division I team since a 70-69 loss to Newberry at the Lay Physical Activities Center on November 15, 1997.

Furman University head baseball coach Ron Smith has announced the signing of 10 recruits to national letters of intent to play for the Paladins.Six of the 10 signees are ranked among PG’s Top 500 rated players, led by RHP/1B Blake Chisolm of Friendswood, Texas (Clear Springs HS) and RHP/1B/OF Brandon Elmy of Nokomis, Fla. (Venice HS).
