Welcoming new citizens to the USA

The Clemson Area League of Women Voters is among LWV groups whose representatives show up in support of naturalization ceremonies for new U-S citizens. This summer League members Bill Hare, Janie Shipley, Sarah McNeil, and Diana Stafford attended two such ceremonies.  Those who accept citizenship pledge, among other things, to “absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which (they) have heretofore been a subject or citizen” and to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America.”  By video citizens recieve a welcome from President Obama.  Once the ceremony finishes, the new citizens are invited to meet LWV members and receive voter registration forms that guide them through the registration process.
