West-Oak student dies after collapsing at school

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis says a West-Oak High School Student died Thursday afternoon after collapsing at school. Addis says 18 year-old Sierra Jaid Sims, of Westminster, died after sustaining cardiac arrest in the Emergency Department of GHS-Oconee Memorial Hospital. EMS was dispatched to the school at 12:06 PM Thursday after Sierra collapsed upon entering her chorus classroom. She was conscious and complaining of chest pains when paramedics arrived. Addis says Sims was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1:52 PM, despite aggressive medical treatment by doctors following cardiac arrest. An autopsy will be performed on Friday. Addis says there is no recent trauma known to be associated with the death.
