West Union council accepts mayor’s apology

West Union has released a statement as the result of the controversy that surrounds a posting by its mayor on her Facebook page. Here is the statement, as released today to 96.3/WGOG NEWS at the Town Hall: “The Town of West Union Town Council met on Friday, October 18, 2013 and accepted Mayor Linda Oliver’s apology for comments posted on a social media website earlier this week. On Tuesday, October 15, 2013 comments were posted in regard to a news article on a social website by Linda Oliver, the Mayor of the Town of West Union, South Carolina. These comments were Ms. Oliver’s personal views and were offensive to many people, especially those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Ms. Oliver deeply regrets that she made the comments and has apologized for making them. Ms. Oliver has also apologized to the Town of West Union and the members of its Town Council. The Town Council has accepted Ms. Oliver’s apology and is eager to move beyond this unfortunate and isolated incident. The Town of West Union will continue to welcome all people to experience small town living in South Carolina.”
