When is loud too loud?

Oconee County Councilman Paul Cain suggested last night the county’s noise control law may be too strong, considering the county’s effort to grow its tourism and recreation offerings. Cain would like to see a re-evaluation of the law as it pertains to just how loud an outdoor concert can get before the strong arm of the law reaches in. He related an incident last summer in which an Oconee County realtor, who played a part in an outdoor concert at Lake Keowee, was ticketed for violating the noise ordinance. Councilman Joel Thrift said any re-evaluation of the noise law should include consulting with the Sheriff’s Office, which has the duty to balance the rights of those to have fun with the rights of those who expect peace and quiet.
