Why Memorial Day is significant

War memorialThe retired judge, Alex Macaulay, will stand before a crowd in Walhalla Monday and tell why Memorial Day is significant to him.  Macaulay was a medic during the war in Vietnam and he’s the featured speaker for Oconee County’s annual Memorial Day ceremony.  Everyone is invited for Monday’s noon hour event at the Walhalla Civic Auditorium. The highlight will be the placing of a wreath at the “actual replica sized” Veterans Memorial Monument—erected on stage at the Civic Auditorium.  The War Memorial displays the names of all 210 men from Oconee County who have died in combat from World War I through the war in Afghanistan.
