Why was Anthony Crawford lynched in Abbeville in 1916? Crawford’s great, great granddaughter says it was because of an altercation over the price of cottonseed. Doria Johnson is a Ph.D. candidate at Wisconsin-Madison and will speak at 6 o’clock Thursday evening, March 27 at Clemson University’s Strom Thurmond Institute. The altercation over the price of cottonseed was followed by the illegal confiscation of the family’s property and banishment. Seeking justice, Johnson successfully pressed the U-S Senate to apologize for their slowness in enacting federal legislation against lynching. On Friday next week, Johnson will lead a public history tour in Abbeville.
