Will Streetscape be Walhalla’s “Yellow Brick Road”?

Economist Bruce Yandle, speaking last week in Walhalla, suggested that the project Streetscape could become the city’s path to prosperity. In front of an audience of both young and old, Yandle likened the re-make of the city’s core commercial business section to the Yellow Brick Road in the children’s classic “Wizard of Oz.” Yandle congratulated those attending the annual membership dinner-meeting of the Greater Walhalla Area Chamber of Commerce for undertaking Streetscape. He also left his audience with suggestions about how to make the city a more attractive place. Yandle related how he and his wife, Dot, regularly pick up litter within a four-block area of their home in Clemson’s Old Calhoun section. He urged Walhallans to consider the planting of yellow tulips and, with the county’s library director in the audience, he congratulated those responsible for starting portable free libraries in the nearby Mountain Rest Community.
