Wording in Mission Statement changed

Only months into her first term, Oconee District One Councilwoman Edda Cammick has been thinking about the wording in the county mission statement, and last night she was able to do something about it. At her urging, the council amended the language. In Cammick’s view, the offending language was the last line “….managing growth and change thru smart, inclusive planning.” That phrase, Cammick explained, suggests a strategy that should not be part of a county’s mission statement. She consulted other county mission statements and suggested the following replacement statement: “It is the mission of Oconee County to provide our current and future citizens and visitors quality services while protecting our neighborhoods, heritage, environment and natural resources in an ever-changing world.” The council agreed with one further change. The word “neighborhoods” was deleted and replaced by “communities.”
