World Diabetes Day in South Carolina

WorldDiabetesDay2014 As part of World Diabetes Day, the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion was lit in blue to commemorate the day last Friday.  Governor Nikki Haley issued a statewide proclamation.  About 800 thousand South Carolinians are affected by type 1 or type 2 diabetes and more than 250 million people in the world suffer from diabetes with only 25 or 50% of them aware of their illness.  Haley urges South Carolinians to be aware of type 1 diabetes and its symptoms, which often first appear in childhood.  The governor also encourages state residents to make healthy lifestyle decisions to diminish the effects of type 2 diabetes, which can be managed by maintaining a healthy weight, diet and by exercising regularly.
