Wounded cops back on duty

Two police officers are back for duty in Lavonia, Georgia, having recovered from gunshot wounds two months ago while on duty.  For the time being, it’s light duty work for Jeffrey Martin and Michael Schulman.  On Saturday, Martin and Schulman were presented the Purple Heart for bravery, along with other awards and citations.  The two were wounded December 12 while attempting to question the driver of vehicle that had been stolen in South Carolina.  Saturday’s ceremony in the First Baptist Church of Lavonia took on the atmosphere of a religious service as speaker after speaker spoke of God’s divine intervention the night of the shooting. Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said God answered prayers and saved the lives of both men.

Martin said he is grateful for those who rushed to help after the shooting and for the friends and loved ones in his life that have helped him recover. Schulman said he has forgiven the alleged shooter, 22-year old Khari Anthony Dashaun Gordon of Greenville and is moving forward with his life because that is what he believes God would have him do.  After a manhunt by dozens of area law enforcement officers, Gordon was captured just hours after the shooting. Gordon faces multiple charges in Georgia including two counts of felony attempt to commit murder. He is also wanted on similar charges for an incident last year in Greenville.
