A jail rumor knocked down

Sheriff Mike Crenshaw has squelched a rumor that a back road is in the plans for the new Oconee jail. Crenshaw yesterday said, “There was never any plan to have any entrance or exit from Pine Street to the detention center. I don’t know how that rumor got started.” That rumor spread during a church service last weekend. To hear there is no truth to it is a relief to at least one Pine Street resident we spoke with. Crenshaw further said, “We have designed the facility so that inmates will be released on the Church Street side of the building. We did this to hopefully prevent any type of congregating near the library.” Those homeowners along Pine Street can expect a buffer of evergreens that’ll serve as a sound and sight barrier. Residents there have complained of vulgar language from the current detention center’s outdoor enclosed recreation area.
