26-year career to end with retirement at county office

This week’s announcement that long-time employee Janice Matheson Holbrooks will retire in June from the office of Oconee Veterans Affairs at first was a shocker to Matheson-Holbrooks’ boss, Jerry Dyar. Dyar admitted that, at first, he couldn’t even think straight, a sign of Matheson-Holbrooks’ valuable contributions to the service of the county veterans. And that’s exactly what she says she will miss: “Being able to help the veterans and their families that I have been able to help,” is what Matheson-Holbrooks says she is most proud of. She also puts the successful display of the Vietnam Veterans mobile wall at the top of her greatest satisfactions in 26 years. Matheson-Holbrooks’ retirement takes effect June 2 which means she’ll be working thru this year’s Memorial Day events in Oconee County.
