“C” Fund help to be sought for Palmetto Trail

Walhalla Mayor Danny Edwards says his city will ask the county’s state “C” Fund Committee for financial assistance in making the Walhalla’s part of the Palmetto Trail extension a reality.  The Palmetto Conservation announced plans last summer to eventually extend the Upstate terminus of the trail from Oconee State Park into the city of Walhalla.  City leaders and the chamber of commerce are excited about the potential for biking and hiking opportunities and attracting tourists to the Walhalla.  According to Edwards, the “C” Fund Committee has leeway to designate some of its monies toward the trail project.  Walhalla will ask for funds to cover a period of years needed to start and complete the trail extension.  But the mayor says he and the council are insistent that their application does not take away the need for general road-paving in the city.  And he said Walhalla would gladly play second fiddle to the Oconee Economic Alliance if the alliance needed funds to fill an immediate and pressing need to attract an industry.
