Charter students and the Hamilton Career Center

In a communication yesterday, the superintendent of the Oconee School District sought to clarify the future relationship between the district’s career center and the planned charter school to open in Salem.  Dr. Michael Thorsland’s announcement brought a response from a representative of the NEXT High School.  “Since funding follows the student,” Thorsland said, “the funding allocated to attend NEXT is not available to SDOC.”  According to the superintendent’s statement, recent communication between district officials and NEXT officials clarified that NEXT High School plans to cover the tuition of students who attend NEXT but who want to take classes at the Hamilton Career Center.  Upper class students already in advanced classes of programs at the career center will be allowed to continue.  However, students in beginning classes will be placed on a waiting list until there is room for them.
