Committee to take to the highway

Members of Oconee’s Scenic Highway Committee will make a road trip Tuesday to assess the looks of S.C. 11 in the county, whether they meet or fail to meet the standards that an official scenic highway should embrace. Dave LaVere, committee chairman, admits there is concern that Scenic 11 could lose its status as the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway. Today LaVere’s committee met with a S.C. DOT representative, who apologized for being unable to answer several questions asked but promised she would get the answers or line up the DOT officials who can answer the questions. Much of today’s discussion centered on what’s allowed within 11’s right-of-way. Committee members on Tuesday plan to pack into a large vehicle, start at one-half of 11 and, if time allows, cover the entire route—from Fair Play to the Bryan Dorn Bridge leading into Pickens County.
