Constituent to Alexander: “I want that tax!”

A constituent of Senator Thomas Alexander exchanged pleasantries with the lawmaker at Westminster today and then told him, “I want that tax.”  She spoke to him after a meeting of the Rotary Club and referred to the fact that while the state’s roads and bridges are crumbling, South Carolina has made no change to the gas tax paid at the pumps since 1987.  That’s 29 years ago—the year that Alexander was first elected to the legislature.  However, because of the adamant opposition by Governor Haley to tax increases, Alexander said, he is resigned to seeing the tax remain at 16 cents a gallon, one of the lowest in the country.  He says it will take another “governor’s cycle” before change.  As to the woman’s comment in favor of a higher gas tax, he said, he hears many South Carolinians say the same thing to him.
