Data breach affects county workers’ pay checks

Earlier today, Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw was informed by Oconee County Administrator Scott Moulder of a data breach involving the payroll service used to pay county employees. Crenshaw made contact with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate. “At this time we do not have an exact dollar amount but we have determined that some county employee payrolls were not deposited directly into their accounts,” says Sheriff Crenshaw.  “This type of data breach is extremely important and potentially involves Federal Law therefore I requested SLED as well as the FBI to investigate this crime.  The Sheriff’s Office is currently working with the company providing payroll services to the county to determine the source of the data breach.  These cases often involve jurisdictions outside of the state of South Carolina and the United States as well.” Moulder issued this statement:  “At this point in the investigation it appears as though the data breach is isolated only to the payroll system, therefore we feel that there is no danger to other bank accounts that the County operates and we have appropriately notified the financial institutions that the county does business with to make them aware of the situation.”
