Diseased tomato plants destroyed

Clemson agriculture officials are worried about a destructive and infectious blight discovered in a home garden in Beaufort County.  There the diseased tomato plants were destroyed, but the further spread of late blight light disease to other parts of South Carolina is considered likely if the fungal-like pathogen arrives in spores blown up from Florida.  Making things worse the cool, cloudy and wet weather affecting the state creates ideal conditions for the disease to escalate.  Clemson recommends all commercial growers and home gardeners carefully check their tomatoes and Irish potatoes and—if the disease is discovered—-treat them immediately.
